Joseph Ortiz's move from Glendale Cactus to Chandler Perry is just the first major high school football coaching move. Expect more.
Here are the high school football job openings and what to expect:
Perry: Filled by Joseph Ortiz, pending Jan. 26 governing board approval.
Cactus: Open. Could Brian Belles be elevated from defensive coordinator? Belles is a Cactus lifer, and has been happy tinkering with defenses. Here's an outside the box candidate — Steve Belles, Brian's uncle. Has enough time passed for the former Hamilton coach to get a shot? He knows how to win championships.
Tempe Corona del Sol: Opened after Jon Becktold resigned. This position could be filled by next week. This could be a big opportunity for Casa Grande coach Jake Barro, who is coming off his first 4A championship and being named the Arizona Cardinals high school football Coach of the Year. Former Mesa Mountain View coach Mike Fell might have a shot because of he had a good relationship with Corona del Sol Athletic Director Roxanne Perrin when she was at Mountain View. The wildcard in this could be Mesquite coach Scott Hare, who led his 2019 and '20 teams to back-to-back 4A titles.
Phoenix Desert Vista: Opened this week after Ty Wisdom and the school agreed to mutually part. Wisdom had one year at Desert Vista, going 5-6 and making the 6A playoffs a season after the Thunder went winless. Don't be surprised if Scott Hare gets strong consideration.
Peoria: This just opened with Peoria lifer Will Babb stepping down. Why not stay in house and make defensive coordinator Jason Golden the head coach? Or maybe elevate receivers coach Chris Miranda?
Mesa Skyline: It's been a struggle since Angelo Paffumi was let go. This could be a mint job with enough athletes for surrounding Desert Ridge to share.
Mesa Westwood: Filled by former Higley offensive coordinator Brandon Large, a former Westwood quarterback.
St. Johns: Mike Morgan left a huge legacy as the state's all-time winningest Arizona high school football coach. Could this open the door for famous alum Marcus Bell, who resigned as Round Valley's head coach last summer?
Avondale Agua Fria: This is the house the Randall McDaniel built. With George Martinez retiring after 44 years of coaching. This is a great opportunity for somebody. Avondale area is growing and talent is coming in. It's not a rebuild job. Could Kelly Epley come back?
Tempe: Todd Hanley was one and done after leaving Flagstaff to lead the Buffaloes last season. The Buffs went 0-8. This is a big rebuild job.
